KYOKUMEN NO MA 曲面の間, 2F
GINZA FLAGSHIP STORE — KYOKUMEN NO MA 曲面の間, 2F
Step onto the second floor, where the clothes of the season are presented, and a soft space shaped by curves opens before you.
From the fixtures and walls to the racks, rounded forms appear throughout. At the center stands a display table with a drum-shaped tabletop. Encircling it is a circular chestnut “R Wall” — R for Round — with curved “R Ladder” racks following the sweep of the wall. Different “R” forms overlap throughout the space, giving it its distinctive character.
The fitting-room floors, the wall just outside them, and the benches are all made from chestnut boards finished with naguri, as on the first floor. Their surfaces were hand-hewn by Mr. Harada of Harada Meiboku in Kyoto, one of the few naguri craftsmen still working in Japan. The carving brings out both a pleasing texture that settles naturally beneath hand and foot and the rich grain of the wood, adding another layer of relief to this world of curves.
The lattice door between the sales floor and the irori was also set on a gentle curve. Its posts are made from reclaimed keyaki wood, while the lattice itself is newly cut chestnut. The door is movable: opened, it lets the view pass through; closed, it divides the space. Each time it turns, the room takes on a different expression — another “R” layered into the composition.
Straight lines are made by people. A space of straight lines is efficient and rational.
The curves found in nature may be less efficient, but they possess an irregular, organic beauty. The texture and comfort we value in our clothes cannot be created through efficiency alone, either.
That is why this world of curved surfaces sits so naturally with 45R clothing, lending even greater depth to the character of the clothes themselves.
And for those who knew the former Ginza Flagship Store, something here may feel quietly familiar.
The display table at the center began with a piece made from African bubinga that once stood on the first floor of the former store. We brought it with us, joined chestnut boards around its sides, and gave it a new form. The R Wall, too, carries the memory of the circular wall that once stood in the old entrance hall, rebuilt here to suit the new space. Even the floor echoes the former store, laid once again with brown pine boards.
This room carries forward the history nurtured in the Ginza Flagship Store over the years, with the hope of passing it on into the future.
