Denim Journey Journal - Episode 3

Pauline Maklès, who has served as the general manager of our French stores since 2008, is a pivotal figure in 45R Europe. Having managed our locations in Saint-Honoré, Saint-Germain, and Le Marais, Pauline has significantly propelled our store development across Paris.

45th Anniversary Limited Edition Charlotte 5 (Indigo Nandonando)

Her favorite features of our denim are unparalleled—the deep, consistent indigo that even extends to the rolled-up cuffs, the distinct fade patterns, and the belt-free design that comfortably clings at the hips. This versatility makes our denim ideal for any occasion, from gardening to business meetings, enabling it to be a daily staple.

In Paris, it's nearly impossible to imagine a day without denim—it’s everywhere! The region's low humidity makes denim particularly comfortable to wear, and there's even a dedicated dry-cleaning menu for denim.

The Charlotte 5 model is especially popular among Parisian women. Its straight, wide silhouette and waist that conforms to a woman’s figure ensure comfort without sacrificing femininity, which Parisian women hold in high regard. Unlike restrictive high-waisted or body-conforming denims, Charlotte 5 offers both ease of movement and feminine appeal, a combination hardly found elsewhere.

When it comes to denim care, myths abound, such as never washing them or even freezing them. However, I advocate based on personal experience: wash them inside out in 30-degree water with detergent about three times a month. Some prefer to wear their denim for a year without washing to develop unique fading and whiskering, but this can actually shorten the fabric's life by allowing bacteria to degrade the fibers.

In Europe, women initially focus on the back view when trying on denim, checking if the silhouette flatters, and noting the size and placement of pockets. Given the long history and established fashion norms in France, there's little room for sartorial risks—children grow up being told what combinations to avoid.

Jomon Denim: Aihiko that retains its color and gains character even after 10 years

At 45R, we engage deeply with our customers, discussing the fabrics, weaving techniques, and how the denim evolves over the years to become "their own." We often reference Hermès to illustrate our commitment to craftsmanship. It may take two to three years, but once our customers experience the comfort of our products, they remember and invariably return.
