A denim born from the pursuit of vintage denim 25 years ago. Inspired by vintage denim, we experimented and crafted a 5-pocket denim using thick 6.5-count yarn, resulting in a ruggedly woven fabric with a distinct texture. The uneven fading and color variations give it a charming appeal. Driven by the desire to recreate such denim once again, we named it "Futatabi 6.5," meaning "again 6.5."

While retaining the rough and uneven texture, this denim feels lighter than before. What's more, it is naturally dyed with indigo! When you receive it, we encourage you to touch the fabric first. You'll be amazed and exclaim, "Wow, it really has that rough and uneven texture!"

How Does Natural 藍 Ai Indigo Denim Age?

Top: Regular Indigo Dye | Bottom: Natural 藍 Ai Indigo Dye

Both pairs are 45R denim, aged over five years, each showcasing indigo blue's beauty. Regular indigo dye presents the "Nakaziro" effect, where the warp's fading indigo exposes the weft's white yarns over time, transitioning the color to a bluish white. In contrast, Natural Ai Indigo dye fades slowly, maintaining a deep indigo hue even with prolonged wear.

This unique aging, known as "Nakaziro," highlights the charm of rope-dyed indigo. As the warp threads lighten, the weft's white threads become visible.

100% natural Ai Indigo differs from regular indigo in that its dye particles are exceptionally fine, allowing the dye to penetrate deeply into the fibers. As a result, even as the denim ages, the weft threads that emerge also display the indigo color, continuously creating a deep blue hue.

Leaves of Persicaria tinctoria, the source of natural Ai Indigo dye
Fermenting and resting the leaves repeatedly to develop the dye
Natural Ai Indigo dye, over a year in the making.

Our natural Ai Indigo is derived from the Persicaria tinctoria plant, grown in Japan. The process involves planting the seeds, nurturing the plants, and harvesting them—followed by fermentation—a journey that takes between one to one and a half years to produce the dye itself.
